November 30, 2010When I first started dancing, one of the "Big Guns" was a guy named Frank LaFemina. Larger than life, Frank was always there with a smile and ready to party. Frank once said to me," Jr. we live an enchanted life. If you know how to dance, really know how to dance, then you can go anywhere in the world and make friends." I was just on a REALLY REALLY long plane flight halfway around the world…literally. I don't know if there's a place farther away from Houston than Perth, Australia. The funny thing is, I felt at home halfway around the world. Amanda Metcalf and Chris Hanratty brought Steph and I out for workshops and lessons. Along the way, we taught tons of classes and did some private training with Amanda and Chris. This originally began as private mentoring and grew into the workshop weekends. Both Steph and I are pleased to say we have made some wonderful new friends…not acquaintances, but real, true, lifelong friends. Amanda and Chris are, in my opinion, part of a lonely breed of dance junkies…the ones I call "lifers" in that they'll be doing this forever. Both of them are rigid in their philosophy that one should learn the nature of the dance, not just patterns. Connection is King in their world. See why we got along so well? I cannot recommend these people highly enough if you're ever in Western Australia. I'm completely convinced that they would not only show you a great time dancing, but they will go out of their way to welcome you to their part of the world. This degree of hospitality and warmth is rare indeed…trust me. Big thanks to Amanda, Chris, Mom, Dad, and the rest of the gang in Perth for one of the most memorable trips of 2010. PERTH ROCKS!!! P.s. Chris wears boys sizes in shirts…big boys, but still boys.
